Schedule C - Schedule C is the IRS form on which a sole proprietor or single-member LLC owner reports business income and expenses as part of their personal Form 1040.
Because a single-member LLC is a disregarded entity by default, its US-person owner does not file a separate LLC income tax return. Instead the business's profit or loss goes on Schedule C attached to the owner's Form 1040. A freelancer running a single-member Wyoming LLC lists gross receipts and deductible expenses on Schedule C, and the net profit flows to both income tax and self-employment tax.
The mistake is applying Schedule C to the wrong owner. Schedule C is for US persons. A foreign owner of a single-member LLC does not file Schedule C; they file Form 5472 with a pro-forma Form 1120 instead, and missing that carries a $25,000 penalty. Non-residents who assume they simply report on a Schedule C, or that a disregarded entity has nothing to file, get the compliance path wrong and discover the gap only when a penalty notice arrives.
Schedule C does not affect the LLC's anonymity. It is filed privately with the IRS as part of the owner's personal return, never on any public state record, so a US owner of an anonymous New Mexico or Nevada LLC reports income on Schedule C while remaining absent from the formation filing. The disregarded-entity treatment that routes income to Schedule C is a tax mechanic, not a privacy feature.
Keeping clean books makes Schedule C straightforward and also reinforces the liability shield, since a well-documented profit-and-loss shows the LLC operating as a genuine separate business rather than a personal account. For US-person owners of single-member LLCs, Schedule C is the everyday tax touchpoint, while multi-member LLCs instead flow income to members through Form 1065 and Schedule K-1. Choosing the right form for the owner's status is what keeps a single-member LLC's taxes as simple as its structure promises, whether the owner is a US person or a non-resident.
