What Is an EIN Verification? Definition and Use

EIN verification is confirming a business's EIN with the IRS, typically via a 147C letter the IRS issues to reconfirm an existing EIN after the original CP 575 is lost.

Definition

EIN Verification - EIN verification is confirming a business's EIN with the IRS, typically via a 147C letter the IRS issues to reconfirm an existing EIN after the original CP 575 is lost.

When a founder opens a business bank account, the bank matches the EIN and the exact legal name against IRS records before funding the account. If the original CP 575 confirmation letter is missing, the owner calls the IRS Business and Specialty line and requests a 147C letter, which the IRS mails or faxes and which banks accept as equivalent proof of the EIN. The 147C restates the same nine-digit number and legal name the IRS already holds, so it functions as an official re-verification rather than a brand-new assignment.

The common mistake is expecting the IRS to reissue the CP 575; that letter is generated only once, so a lost copy leaves the 147C as the only route, and it can take several weeks by mail. A name mismatch between the EIN record and the LLC's Articles is a frequent reason banks reject an account, and reconciling it means correcting either the state filing or the IRS record before the account can open. Keeping the CP 575 safe from day one avoids both the delay and the mismatch scramble entirely.

The 147C never lists owners publicly and does not touch state-record anonymity in Wyoming, New Mexico, Delaware, or Nevada, since it only reconfirms the EIN and legal name already on file with the IRS. The document goes to the requesting business, not into any public registry. Anonymousllc.co delivers a scanned CP 575 immediately on issuance so clients never lose the original, and obtains replacement 147C letters for existing LLC clients who have already misplaced theirs.
