Anonymous LLC Bank Account Checklist (2026)

A practical, ordered checklist for opening a business bank account for an anonymous LLC. Gather the right documents, apply in the right order, pick the right bank, and satisfy KYC without exposing your name on the public record.

Documents you need before you apply

Every US bank runs the same core identity check, so gather this packet first. Applying with a complete set is the single biggest predictor of a fast approval.

  • EIN confirmation. Your CP 575 letter from the IRS, or a 147C letter if the original is lost. The bank matches the EIN to the exact legal name of your LLC. If you still need one, start with our EIN service.
  • State-stamped Articles of Organization. The filed and approved formation document, not a draft.
  • Signed operating agreement. Especially important for a single-member LLC, since it shows who controls the entity.
  • Government photo ID or passport for each owner. Non-residents use a passport.
  • Beneficial owner details for every person holding 25% or more of the LLC, including full legal name, date of birth, address, and ID number.
  • A clear business description that explains what you sell and how you make money.

The step order that gets you approved

Sequence matters. Doing these out of order is the most common reason a first application stalls. Follow this order:

  1. Form the LLC first. The bank needs a filed, state-stamped entity before it can open anything.
  2. Get the EIN. No US bank opens a business account without an EIN. See forming an anonymous LLC with an EIN.
  3. Draft and sign the operating agreement so ownership and control are documented.
  4. Write a precise business description before you touch the application form.
  5. Choose the bank that matches your residency and business type (next section).
  6. Submit one clean application with the full document packet attached.
  7. Fund the account promptly once approved to keep it in good standing.

Rushing to the bank before the EIN arrives is the classic mistake. The EIN is the anchor the whole application hangs on.

Choosing the right bank for your situation

The right bank depends mostly on whether you are a US resident and what your business does. Match yourself to a row here before applying.

How to write a business description that passes review

A vague business description is the number one cause of manual review and delay. Compliance teams need to understand your business well enough to assess risk, so specificity works in your favor.

  • Say what you sell. Name the actual product or service, not a category.
  • Say who buys it. Consumers, other businesses, a specific industry.
  • Say how money moves. Card payments through Stripe, invoices, marketplace payouts.
  • Say where customers are. US, worldwide, a specific region.

Compare a weak line, "online consulting," with a strong one, "we provide monthly SEO consulting to US dental practices, billed by invoice via ACH." The second gives the bank everything it needs to approve without asking. Honesty and precision are the whole game here.

Common rejection reasons and how to fix them

Most declines trace back to a short list of fixable problems. Check yourself against each before you apply.

Rejection reasonFix
Name on EIN does not match the filed LLC nameOrder a 147C letter so the exact legal name matches
Vague business descriptionRewrite with product, customer, payment method, and region
Restricted industry for that bankApply to a bank that serves your category
Incomplete owner detailsProvide full details for every 25% owner
Applicant from a restricted countryUse a bank that accepts your region, or an alternative path
Draft instead of stamped ArticlesUpload the filed, state-approved document

If one bank declines, do not give up on banking. Adjust the specific issue and apply to a second bank in parallel. A single rejection is a signal to fix and re-apply, not a dead end.

Keeping anonymity intact while satisfying KYC

This is the part founders worry about most, so be clear on how it works. You will give the bank your full identity, and that is required by law under the Customer Due Diligence rule (31 CFR 1010.230). Doing so does not expose your name on the public record. The bank keeps your KYC file private and does not publish it.

  • Do give the bank accurate, complete owner information. This is legally required and keeps the account stable.
  • Do keep your registered agent on the public state filing, which is where your public anonymity lives.
  • Do not use a nominee to hide the true owner from the bank. That is fraud, not privacy. See our nominee services warning.

Non-resident checklist add-ons

If you are opening from outside the US, your packet is nearly identical, with a few adjustments. Plan for these before you apply.

  • Valid passport as your primary ID, since you will not have a US driver license.
  • EIN obtained without an SSN, which is available to non-residents through the IRS.
  • A verifiable address, which can be your foreign home address; a US mailing address is not required to apply at Mercury or Relay.
  • Realistic expectations on timing, since remote identity verification can add a day or two.

You never need to visit the United States to open at Mercury or Relay. Everything happens online, and your public-record anonymity is unaffected. The non-resident banking guide covers the full process end to end.

Let us handle the whole application for you

Banking assistance is included with every Anonymousllc.co formation, at no separate fee. We prepare the entire packet, write the business description compliance teams approve without back-and-forth, and match you to the right bank for your residency and industry.

Because we apply to four to five banks in parallel, a single rejection does not leave you unbanked, which lifts the overall approval rate above 90%. Formation is $397 all-in in Wyoming, from $347 total depending on the state (New Mexico $347, Delaware $407, Nevada $722). Frequently asked questions

Your EIN confirmation (CP 575 or a 147C letter), state-stamped Articles of Organization, a signed operating agreement, a government ID or passport for each owner, full details for every 25% owner, and a clear business description. A complete packet is the biggest predictor of fast approval.
Yes. No US bank opens a business account without an EIN, and the bank matches that EIN to your exact legal LLC name. Form the LLC first, then get the EIN, then apply to the bank.
Mercury and Relay are the standard choices for non-residents because they open on a passport and an EIN with no US visit. US residents who want interest often use Bluevine, which requires an SSN.
The most common reasons are a name mismatch between the EIN and the filed LLC, a vague business description, a restricted industry for that particular bank, incomplete owner details, or uploading draft rather than stamped Articles. Each of these is fixable, then you can re-apply.
Be specific about what you sell, who buys it, how money moves, and where your customers are. Replace a vague line like 'online consulting' with something concrete like 'monthly SEO consulting for US dental practices, billed by ACH invoice.'
No. The bank keeps your KYC information in a private file it does not publish. Your public anonymity lives on the state filing, where only your registered agent appears. The two records are separate.
No. Using a nominee to hide the true owner from the bank is fraud, not privacy. Using a registered agent on your public state filing is legal and normal; a nominee bank signer who conceals the real owner is not.
Yes. Banking assistance is included with every formation at no extra fee. We prepare the full packet, write the business description, and apply to four to five banks in parallel so a single rejection does not leave you unbanked.
